Leadership V scores a Thunder Court

Although the afternoon was cold and windy, a crowd gathered around the new OKC Thunder basketball court located at Ackley Park last Friday for a formal dedication. The court was provided through the efforts of the Elk City Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership V Class and by the partnership with Thunder Cares Foundation and Enables Midstream Partners.  

Thunder mascot, Rumble and two of the cheerleaders joined the Thunder staff in creating excitement about the dedication and opening of the court. Mayor Bill Helton spoke first, welcoming dignitaries and members of the community. He was followed by Craig Harris, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Enables Midstream. 

“Part of our goal is to support the communities where we work. It’s an ongoing effort and we’re glad to be a part of it,” he said.

The next speaker was representative from the Thunder Cares Foundation, Christine Berney, vice president of Community Relations for the Thunder. She announced, “We’re incredibly excited to be cutting the ribbon on a new court for the community of Elk City. We hope it provides a fun and inspiring place for the kids in this community to play and encourages them to stay active and make healthy choices both on and off the court.”

The ribbon was cut with the help of fourth, fifth and sixth graders cheering them on. Those students were Madeline Laufer, Jhournee Reece, Kenedee Wyatt, Mylee Moran, Kate Ivester, Lizzie Dugger, Reece Burton, Cole Buie, Wyatt McConnell, Hooper Stover, Kit Hunter and Austin Meador. Followed by Elk City girls and boys basketball teams conducting Thunder clinic with Rumble and Thunder staff.
