Winifred Nadine Choice
Winifred Nadine Choice, 98 of Burns Flat, Oklahoma, was born on March 30, 1920 in Stillwater, Oklahoma to C.E. and Susie (Spyres) Mayfield. She passed way on February 11, 2019 in Elk City, Oklahoma.
Nadine grew up in Stillwater and attended Oklahoma A & M College (now Oklahoma State University) and worked at Katz Department Store. While at A & M she majored in Home Economics earning a Bachelor of Science degree. She met Merl (Lawrence Merl Choice) while working at Katz. They were married on July 21, 1940 in Stillwater and were married for 57 ½ years before Merl’s passing. Their marriage was blessed with three children: Lawrence E “Larry” Choice, Anita L. Lockwood and Robert A. “Bobby” Choice.
Merl and Nadine lived in several Oklahoma towns. In 1954 they moved to Clinton where Mel sold farm equipment for International Harvester Company and eventually purchased the store. Nadine worked as a bookkeeper for over twenty years at First National Bank, which is now the First Bank and Trust of Clinton.
In 1971, Merl became the Airport Manager at Clinton-Sherman Airport in Burns Flat, Oklahoma and they move to Burns Flat.
Nadine was an excellent homemaker, baker and cook. She loved to bake cakes to take to her various appointments. Her doctor, hairdresser and mechanic were among those who enjoyed her delicious gifts. She also enjoyed sewing and craft projects. Her home was always open and welcoming to family and friends. For years she helped children with cooking projects in the classroom of her daughter-in-law, Karen Choice, in Elk City, Oklahoma. Many children (now grown) will remember her as “Granny Choice.”
Graveside services will be held at 10:30 p.m., Friday, February 15, 2019 at the Clinton Cemetery Gazebo in Clinton, Oklahoma. Rick Ellis will officiate. Services have been entrusted to the care of Martin-Dugger Funeral Home in Elk City, Oklahoma.
Cherishing her memory is her daughter, Anita Lockwood of Westminster, Colorado, son Robert A. Choice and his wife Karen of Burns Flat, Oklahoma, daughter in law Donna Choice of San Jose, California; six grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and step great-grandson; several nephews and nieces. Her family lives across the United States, from California to New Yok and Florida. She was most dearly loved by her family and friends
She is preceded in death by her husband, Merl, son, Larry, parents, and her brother Jack Mayfield and his wife Janette.
